Reduce your exposure

The good news is that there are lots of ways you can reduce your exposure to everyday chemicals without trying to change everything at the same time.

You can also give your body some natural boosts with exercise and a hot sauna or bath.

Take your shoes off at the door

This is easiest change to make and immediately reduces the number of chemicals entering your home. Anything you may have collected on the soles of your shoes such as tyre dust, brake pad and exhaust emissions, pesticides, and a host of environmental pollutants in dust, will stay at the door.

Eat organic food & filter your water

Swap some of your favourites to organic foods grown without herbicides or pesticides. Get to know the PAN Dirty Dozen food list to avoid foods with the highest pesticide levels.

Filter your water for drinking and cooking and wash fruit and vegetables in clean filtered water to dilute surface chemicals. Tabletop filters and reverse osmosis water filtering systems will remove most water contaminants.

Reduce your contact with microplastics

Swap some of your personal care products including makeup, shampoo, and body lotions to products that are ‘Free from’ chemical groups such as parabens and phthalates. Download the Yuka app and scan 1000’s of product barcodes to check ingredients.

Store food in glass not plastic, and remove convenience food from plastic containers before heating, especially in the microwave. This reduces leaching of microplastic particles into food.

Natural boosts for your body

Exercise raises core temperature which helps the body to eliminate toxins and give the immune system a boost. Any form of cardio exercise increases circulation in the blood vessels which can trigger the body to release chemicals that might otherwise be stored in body fat as a body burden.

Taking a sauna increases the circulation rate of the blood helping the body to flush toxins out more quickly. If you can find an infrared sauna the effects are thought to reach deeper into the body, promoting a deeper level of sweating. Always seek medical guidance if you are unsure about sauna use.

Add a handful of Epsom salts (magnesium sulphate) to your bath, it’s thought to help reduce inflammation in the body organs when absorbed through the skin.
